Research

There was very little research I could do for my documentary as it was an observational documentary meaning I was unobtrusively looking into 'Life in Rehearsal'. However I did do some research into the origins of Western theatre. The lack of documentary evidence makes it impossible to determine exactly how theatre began, though it is generally believed to have evolved from religious rituals. It is difficult to decide at which point ritual became theatre. The most widely held theory about the origins of theatre is that it evolved from rituals created to act out natural events symbolically, thereby bringing them down to human scale and making the unknown more easily accessible. As part of these rituals, the natural elements were given personalities, which were in turn abstracted as spirits and gods. By wearing masks and moving in certain patterns, individuals could impersonate these deities. The Greeks then developed different genres such as Commedia de l'Arte. Eventually t...

TV Advert Questionnaire Results

To find out whether this was a product people were interested we simply asked a handful of people whether they had ever heard of Toni and Guy to which the majority replied yes. Next we asked them if they had ever used a Toni and Guy product and if so which one. We asked this to find out what product we should advertise. Those who had used a Toni and Guy product said that they had used the dry shampoo so we decided to rebrand this product as it was the most popular among our target audience.

Introduction to the News

On the 12th of June 2018 at 7pm BBC News covered international news stories including Kim Jong Un's 'unwavering commitment to denuclearisation' and congresses opinions on this historical summit along with opinions on Brexit. They were shown in an unexpected order as Donald Trumps summit was the main headline which shows that it wasn't in order of British familiarity. Instead the news story that has been the talk of Britain since it started was placed last in the running order. Like every BBC news programme it started with the ticking clock being played continuously behind the news readers reading the main headlines of the day. This symbolises that they provide round the clock news and updates from round the world. This piece had two presenters: Katty Kay, 53 years old, female; and Christian Fraser, 45, male. A newsreader is a person that presents either regional, national or international news stories on TV or radio. A newsreader will need to have excellent communic...

Documentary Mini Task

A documentary is a piece of visual entertainment that is used to inform people on specific subjects and topics. The dictionary definition for documentary is using pictures or interviews with people in real events to provide a factual report on a particular subject. [1] An expository documentary speaks directly to the viewer often in the form of an authoritative commentary using voiceover or titles proposing a strong argument and point of view to persuade the viewer. An example of an expository documentary is ‘Americas Most Wanted’. This is an expository documentary as it begins with a presenter introducing the topic. It contains a series of secondary pictures showing the person who is the focus of the documentary. There is also an interview with local police to support the topic of the documentary. This makes it an expository documentary as it speaks directly to the viewer to try and persuade them to be in favour of the topic. An observational documentary is where unobtrusive ...

Documentary Proposal

My 3 minute wonder documentary is about what happens in rehearsals within musical theater and why drama is so important for young people.. It is going to be an observational documentary that explores how the lives of young people have been changed for the better through drama. My target audience is going to be younger children between the ages of 11 and 14. This is because I want to try and encourage younger children to partake within the performing arts industry. My secondary audience is going to be parents to try and show them the positive impacts drama can have during a child’s development. I will be filming in my place of work as I am a vocal coach who teaches children of the age in my primary audience. I will not need any additional crew for my filming process but I will be interviewing the children that I teach to try and gain a further insight into why they have pursued drama. An example of a question I will ask them is 'what made you want to take up drama?' I will not n...

TV Advert Evaluation

I think my re-branded TV advert for Toni and Guy was successful for a variety of reasons however I feel like there are parts that could have been done better if we were doing it a second time round. The brief for this assignment was to do research into Unilever and the products it promotes and re-brand one of those products. Within my group we decided to re-brand Toni and Guy which is a well known hair care brand. To come to this decision we watched and listened to everyone's presentation about what brand they wanted to re-brand and once we had heard them all we decided which brand we wanted to do. The original primary target audience for Toni and Guy was from ages 18-22 and those with a relatively large income as most of their products are on the pricey side. Also whilst Toni and Guy don't have many adverts broadcast on television the ones that are put on air, all feature models that are the same age as their demographic. Also Toni and Guy is a product that is mainly ai...

Evaluation for Depict Production

Me and my group made a 90 second short film depicting ideas about conformity and how society views people with different ideology's for this project. Our camera use was very simple as our production was made up of different people but with the same shot type. All of our shots were either close ups or wide shots. When people were walking down the path we used a wide shot and with the shots of the faces we used close up shots. We also used an extreme close up of an eye behind the mask to emphasize the fact that people were still individual underneath the mask. Our camera angle also didn't alter much as we kept it very straight on to what was happening. The only time we moved our camera angle was in the final two shots where the camera follows the masks down off of the peoples faces. We kept our editing quite simple as we felt like if we added too many cuts or fades into the already confusing story line would become lost. We added simple cuts between shots in order to ...

Initial Ideas

We went with our very fist idea with our film, which was that we wanted to base it on a metaphor. We researched some different metaphors and chose the one we liked the most which ended up being 'I'm lost in a sea of nameless faces'. This is how we came up with the idea to do a film about conformity and about how society teaches us to follow the majority. Instead of following this concept we broke it showing that just because the majority is doing something doesn't mean you should do it as well.

Depict Essay

Pre-Production Process The pre-production process is an important part of making a moving image text. Without effective pre-production planning, there would be little or no organisation of personnel and equipment, or no creative direction for the media text being made. The pre-production process begins with conceptualisation of the media text, which is done using various creative processes including script-writing, story boards and shot lists. Without this step, the team would make mistakes when shooting the media texts, as the scripts and shots would not be clear. After the completion of the creative planning, there are many legal and logistical issues that need to be sorted before filming can begin. This includes equipment, prop and costume hire and location organisation. As well as the legal paperwork, including location recces, talent release forms and a thorough risk assessment of the production process. These steps assure that there is no legal issues when filming, and that the...

Depict - Short Film Reviews

Picking Sides The first short film I watched was called ‘Picking Sides’ by Dotty Kultys & Beatriz Pinto. This was an animated film about a man and his dog who get caught in the middle of two warships. The film starts off with just the man and his dog in their little boat. Right from beginning there is a very calm tone set. The sea was very tranquil and the colours that they used set a very peaceful scene. Even when the action increases the colour still quite light. I think this has been done to show the hope that people must have when they're stuck in the middle of war. We are lead to believe that this short film is going to be free from strife however this harmonious mood is quickly dismissed when the two warships are brought into frame. Since this film never changes it shot type or shooting perspective it all it allows the watcher to take in every detail of the scene. If you look closely at the warships you notice how you can see the hull below the water. This is don...
